Chapter Fifteen

Following his nose, Chris guided Jade through the woods. Every once in a while, she would direct him away from the ward. Her steps were light and purposeful. She barely made a noise as if she had been born and raised in the forest. Maybe she had been. There was a lot about Jade Ellington that he didn’t know but look forward to discovering. She would be an excellent hunting partner.

A small stream flowed down the mountain. It passed through a drainage tunnel that went under the road where dirt and debris collected around the edges. “You asked for a source of water. Here you go.”

She dipped her fingers and grabbed a handful of mud. “Perfect.” She glanced up at him, gaze full of mischief. “Time to strip.”

“Say what?”

“Take off your clothes.”

He had been waiting for her to say those words for days. In all honesty, it was more like weeks. Looking back, he had been slowly courting Jade since they had first met. Starting at the nest when he had made her a sandwich and she had eaten it without question. It wasn’t truly a mating meal, but the instinct to feed her and take care of her had been fierce. He’d been too wary to pursue his attraction, waiting for her to leave him for someone else.

Oddly, it had taken just that to force him to make a move. Ryan’s interest in Jade and the threat of losing her had spurred him to take action. Chris didn’t hesitate to pull off his T-shirt. He folded it, then set it on a rock. He loved the way she fought not to caress his body with her gaze. Her eyes always won the struggle. He popped open the button of his jeans and her sharp green eyes jerked toward the move.

She licked her lips and rose to her feet.

Heartbeat hammering in his ears, Chris forced his body to remain still. He didn’t want to startle her. This moment was as thrilling as stalking deer in a glade. One false move and she could run.

Jade stood toe-to-toe, facing him. Beautiful, pixie-sized, and fascinating. She tilted her head way back to look up at his face. “The ward is repelled by natural occurring substances.” She smeared the handful of mud over his bare chest.

He grunted at the sudden coldness. “Makes sense. Eoin wouldn’t want to be alerted whenever the wind kicked up some leaves over his borders.” He grimaced. “You’re right, though. I don’t like this plan.”

She pulled her shirt over her head and set it over his in a crinkled mess.

All the air left his lungs. Her breasts were perfect. “I changed my mind. Let me help.” He bent and scooped the handful of mud and slowly applied it along her arm. “I assume we have to be completely covered to trick the spell.”

Jade nodded, eyes wide and innocently staring back at him. She held out her other arm for him to cover.

“You don’t mind if I help?” From the way her nipples budded, he didn’t think she minded at all.
